Amex Sweetens Deal on “Blue Cash Preferred” Rewards Credit Card

If you have your eye on an Amex Blue Cash Preferred credit card for the 6 percent cash back on supermarket purchases – American Express just sweetened the deal.  Amex has upped the sign up bonus from $150 to $250 cash back dollars after spending $1000 in the first three months, for selected applicants.  This increased reward effectively offsets the $75 annual fee for three years.

This cash back rewards card pays 6 percent on supermarket purchases, 3 percent on gas and department store purchases, and 1 percent everywhere else.  The Terms and Conditions spell out that supermarkets do not include superstores or warehouse clubs and that gas purchases must be from stand alone gas stations.

Supermarket purchases up to $6000 per year are eligible for the 6 percent cash back – so this is effectively a way to cut $360 off your grocery bill every year.  That’s a month’s worth of groceries in my household!

The cash back is available as a statement credit in when your rewards balance is $25 or more.

This special offer is available through the “Offers Matched for You” deals.  An inquiry on this site results in a “soft” credit pull that does not impact your credit score.  You can leave the field asking for your social security number blank.

The following department store purchases earn 3 percent cash back:  Bealls, Belk® , Bloomingdale’s, Bon Ton Stores Inc., Boscov’s Department Store, Century 21® Department Stores, Dillard’s Department Stores, J.C. Penney Company, Inc., Kohl’s® , Lord & Taylor, Macy’s, Neiman Marcus, Nordstrom, Saks Fifth Avenue, Sears®Merchandise Group, and Stein Mart®.

Please remember:  read the full terms and conditions before you apply; guard your credit rating; and do not consider applying for a rewards credit card if you do not pay off your balance in full and on time each month.
