Frontier Airlines to Link Washington Dulles with 14 Cities; $39 Intro Fares on Tap

Frontier Airlines Credit Card
Jim, Joe, Jay and Gary the Penguins

As a Reston, Virginia local, I was pretty psyched about the news this week that Frontier Airlines will be flying a regular schedule of flights to 14 popular destinations out of Dulles International Airport (IAD) near Washington, DC.

Grab Introductory Fares on Frontier Airlines Now!

Frontier is a low-cost airline and they capped their announcement with a 12 hour sale with fares as low as $15 one way!  I didn’t get in on the sale — I heard the website was pretty overwhelmed — but there is still a chance for introductory fares as low as $39 if you buy your tickets by May 17, 2014.

Beginning August 19, 2014, Frontier will offer nonstop service to:

Frontier Airlines Credit Card
Foxy the Fox
  • Atlanta
  • Charlotte, NC
  • Orlando, FL
  • Minneapolis/St. Paul
  • Tampa, FL

Beginning September 8, 2014, Frontier will begin nonstop service to:

  • Chicago-O’Hare
  • Cincinnati
  • Detroit
  • Fort Lauderdale, FL
  • Las Vegas
  • Memphis, TN
  • Fort Myers, FL
  • St. Louis
  • St. Augustine/Jacksonville, FL

Frontier’s  service from Washington-Dulles will operate on 168-seat Airbus A320 aircraft.

Cranky Flyer has a great analysis today about the tortured history of low cost airlines at Dulles Airport and it’s not a pretty story.  Hopefully, Frontier’s entry into this market will create some price competition.

Frontier Credit Card Sign Up Good for Two Free Round Trips

Frontier Airlines has a pretty generous standard award chart, with 20,000 miles required for a roundtrip for travel within the U.S., including Alaska.  The Frontier Airlines World MasterCard® offers a sign-up bonus of 40,000 miles after spending $500 in the first 90 days.

So the current credit card offer is good for two round trips, and then some.  That’s because you can travel with a companion for just 15,000 per round trip.

That’s a pretty generous bonus for a very low spend requirement!

There is a $69 annual fee which is not waived in the first year.  Note that Barclay’s advertises this offer as a 50,000 mile bonus, but that includes the balance transfer provision, which is never a good deal because of the fees charged.

What’s more, look at all the cute animals that you can get on your credit card!

Herndon Date Night: Half Off on the Half Shell

Groupon Deal at Ice House Cafe
Half Off at Ice House Cafe
Herndon, VA

I’m done with Resturants.com.  I gave up on Entertainment Book a long time ago.

But there are still a couple of dining discount programs that I keep an eye on.

The first is the Dining Rewards Network, that allows you to earn miles or cash back for dining at certain restaurants and paying with a registered credit card.

The second is Groupon.

Of these two programs, Groupon definitely offers the better deals, because you can get as much as half off.  The Dining Rewards Network is better for earning a few extra frequent flyer miles to keep your account active.

I find that there are still a few quality seafood restaurants in both these programs in the Northern Virginia area.

Case in Point:  The Dining Rewards Network

  • Tara Thai in Herndon, Virginia:  This restaurant consistently serves delicious food, beautifully presented, including many fresh fish and seafood options.  Highly recommended. The prices are reasonable, too.
  • Clydes of Tysons Corner:  See my review here.

Groupon:  A Date Night Deal

  • Groupon Deal Ice House Cafe
    Groupon Deal Ice House Cafe
    Herndon, VA

The Ice House Cafe, Herndon, VA:  There are a few local gems in “downtown” Herndon that have stood the test of time.  The Ice House Cafe is one of the few joints around with an oyster bar, and live jazz on the weekends.

Groupon is currently offering a choice of several 50 percent off deals:

  • $17 for one dozen oysters or clams and two soups of the day or house salads, valid Monday–Thursday (up to a $35.90 value);
  • $17 for one dozen oysters or clams and two soups of the day or house salads, valid Friday or Saturday (up to a $35.90 value);
  • $24 for two dozen oysters or clams, valid Monday–Thursday (up to a $48 value); or
  • $24 for two dozen oysters or clams, valid Friday or Saturday (up to a $48 value).

Kind Bars — Best Travel Snack — Deep Discount

Kind Bars from Relay Foods
Kind Bars from Relay Foods

When I travel, I like to throw a few healthy snacks in my overnight bag.  Just in case.  Kind Bars are my latest healthy snack obsession.  These delicious bars are made from nuts, fruit, and whole grains and are packed with fiber, protein and antioxidants.

I love them, but they are expensive.  I’ve seen them sell for $1.50 per bar at Walmart, and for $4.00 apiece at an airport vendor.

When The Girl and Globe alerted me to an opportunity to save $30 on $50 at Relay Foods, I jumped on it.  Relay Foods sells over 20 varieties of Kind Bars — and until October 31, 2013, they are on sale for $1.

With the introductory discount, you can pick up Kind Bars for as little as 40 cents each!

Eat Lobster, Earn Points

Clyde's Lobster SpecialMy husband and I honeymooned in Maine, so every year we try to go out for a celebratory lobster dinner.

Lucky for me that Clyde’s, my favorite restaurant chain, has extended their lobster special through the month of October.

Luckier yet that Clyde’s of Tyson’s Corner in Northern Virginia is part of the Dining Rewards program.

By signing up for the US Airways Dividend Miles Dining rewards program, you can earn 1,000 miles the first time you dine at a member restaurant, spend $40, and write a review.

Lesser known restaurants participate in the Dining Rewards program to attract customers and favorable reviews.  The Metro construction at Tyson’s Corner must be deterring customers, because Clyde’s is well known for its high quality food, fanciful decor, and reasonable prices.

Part 3: Check Inn to 20 to 40 Percent Savings with CLC Lodging

Check Inn CLC Lodging

If you’ve ever wished your small business could take advantage of the discounts on lodging that big corporations negotiate with hotels . . . you may be in luck!

If you have a small business credit card such as one of the Chase Ink MasterCards, there’s a little known benefit that can save you 20 to 40 percent on lodging costs.

I stumbled upon several seldom-publicized travel savings opportunities which I discuss in a three-part series of articles.

Part 1: Visa SavingsEdge

Part 2:  MasterCard Easy Savings

Part 3:  Check Inn – CLC Lodging

The MasterCard Easy Savings program offers cash rebates for certain everyday business purchases.  You need to register your business MasterCard (such as the Chase Ink credit cards) in advance.

One of the most attractive benefits of the EasySavings program is free membership in the Check Inn Card program run by CLC Lodging.

This program offers pre-negotiated “corporate discounts” of 20-40 percent on lodging with 17,000 hotels in the U.S. and Canada.

Here’s How it Works:
